Guide: Buying a Hang (drum) on eBay or Craigslist

A PANArt Hang DrumPlease note: This guide is only intended for people who have their hearts and minds set on buying an original PANArt Hang. If you're just looking to buy a hand pan, you're much better off taking a look at our Marketplace for more affordable options.

Gone are the days when you can simply head over to panart.ch and buy a genuine Hang from PANArt.

In 2013 PANArt discontinued the Hang. This means that if you want to buy a handpan that is just like the original Hang, you have two options:

  1. Buy a Hang second hand on eBay or Craigslist and pay double perhaps even quadruple what it was originally sold for.
  2. Buy a hand pan that is made according to the PANArt method by a manufacturer such as Tzevaot. These are usually around $3000 and are available on Amazon.

Option 1: Buying a Hang from eBay or Craigslist

If you have your mindset on buying a PANArt Hang, we don't blame you. They are fast becoming collector's items and they are certainly an item that is going to hold it's valued over time, it's most likely going to in fact increase in value with age due to the limited number of them out there.

If you want to go down this route, you're going to need:

Diligence

Because of the high price of the Hang, it can attract scammers. Although good deals can and do come along on eBay and Craigslist, it's very important to be diligent and make sure that you don't fall victim to a scam.

How to avoid scams:

  1. Look at the seller's history and feedback. Is it positive? Have they sold many items? A fresh account is a huge red flag.
  2. Ask the seller if you can come and see the Hang to try it or buy it in person. If the seller declines to meet in person, this can be a red flag.
  3. If the deal is too good to be true, it possibly is.

You're gonna need money. Tons of it.

Be prepared to pay more than what you should have to.

You can buy almost exactly the same thing for around $3,000 on Amazon.

If you don't care about the instrument being made according to the PANArt method, check out the Handpans available (and often in stock) on our shop. These are a far cheaper alternative 🙂

There are alternatives to the PANArt brand that are made according to the PANArt method. This means they're pretty damn close to the original thing for half, perhaps even quarter of the price of a second hand Hang.

Granted it won't have PANArt engraved on it but it will still sound amazing. It will also very likely retain its price if you ever need to resell it.

Have patience

Don't buy the first Hang you see listed on eBay. They're often priced WAY higher than they should be and better offers are always popping up. Sometimes people just want to sell their Hang quickly and list it up for around what they paid for it. Some may honor the initial purchase agreement that one should not sell the instrument for more than they paid for it. Most people are of course ignoring this completely and selling their Hangs for as much as they can get, and can you really blame them?

Getting back to the point, be patient, and wait for a good deal to pop up before rushing into a purchase.

Option 2: Buying from Amazon

It turns out Amazon has a pretty decent range of them and for reasonable prices too. Some of the Hang Drums out of Bali are priced quite reasonably between $1,900 to $2,900. While the instruments from Bali do not come with a certificate of authenticity stating that they were made according to the genuine PANArt method, they are still beautiful sounding instruments. You can also find Handpans manufactured in Vietnam on Amazon, although you can find the same instruments on our Handpan Handpan Shop with free shipping.
