The 8 Note Handpan is tuned in the F Minor “Akebono” scale, which is very popular amongst handpan players. This scale has a slightly different approach to the traditional pentatonic minor scale in that it creates somewhat of a mysterious and wondering sound.
The 8 Note Handpan plays beautifully and has some lovely resonant sounds. The smooth coating makes it very comfortable to play and feel while it weighs only 5kg, making it very easy to carry.
The one and a half octave range whose lower and upper range have a distinguishable gap between them (perfect fourth Db to Gb) brings greater emphasis to its lower and higher notes.
All 8 notes of the Handpan have a beautiful resonance, however players can also use the other surfaces of the drum to make some effective harmonics and percussion sounds. You can also use the head cover to make some similar percussive sounds.
The first three notes outline an augmented F minor chord which creates quite an open and expansive sound. The middle Db really stands out, creating another mood and adding tension and excitement to the preceding notes. The final four notes (Gb-Ab-Bb-C) outline a whole tone scale which further adds to the mysterious sounds of this handpan. Although the Akebono tuning sounds quite peculiar, some strangely effective tunes and harmonies can be made when jamming on the 8 Note Handpan in F Minor and most handpan videos are done so in this key!
All in all, the Handpan is a beautiful instrument capable of enchanting all players and listeners.
Please note: Players are advised to only use their hands when playing these instruments as excessive force can potentially cause damage.
